The DFL (the Democrats) is having their state convention is Rochester this weekend, where the big news will be whom they decide to endorse to run against Norm Coleman in the fall. The top two choices are Al Franken and Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer (a Professor at St. Thomas University up in the Cities, I believe.) Basically, to get the official party endorsement, you need 60% of the delegates at the Convention to vote your way- so there might be some suspense (or maybe not, who knows) at the Convention this weekend.
Personally, I find Norm Coleman unimpressive. There's a reason the Democrats have their sights set on him and to me, it's because the guy changes his positions about as much as you and I change our underwear (every day, by the by) first he was all for the war, now he's against. So on and so forth. Just not at all impressed by him. (Perhaps I'll try and elaborate on that at a later date.)
Al Franken (yes, that Al Franken) is also someone I'm not a huge fan of. I just don't really find him all that funny and what with revelations about his shady tax dealings and non-payment of employees insurance plus his 'satirical' article for Playboy called 'Porn-O-Rama' I wonder how many more things needs to come out before the DFL actually puts up a candidate that might have a shot at a very winnable seat.
But, I don't know. Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer would be my personal choice. Polls in the Star Tribune have Coleman well ahead of him, but he doesn't exactly have a lot of name recognition yet, so I think that number will close in a hurry. Problem is, he needs the delegates this weekend to know who he is. Given the latest stuff on Franken, they might not need too much prodding.
I smell a surprise potentially in the making. But I could be dead wrong.
