Flood Updates VIII, 6-17-08

In Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, and Des Moines efforts are turning to recovery and Southeast Iowa is frantically sandbagging as floodwaters move southwards. Iowa City has some good news, as I-80 and I-380 have re-opened and some UI Buildings have had power restored- but the Main Library is taking on some water currently. Further updates here, here and pictures here.

Southeast Iowa is gearing up for flooding. Federal officials are warning that as many as 27 levees could breach along the Mississippi (one has already failed in Illinois) and the crop damage in Iowa (which is immense) is pushing food prices higher.

In Cedar Rapids, damage assessments are starting to come in. People are trying to figure out what the massive flooding was such as a surprise- and recovery efforts are continuing. Records at the Mother Mosque may also have been lost.
