Mike Meyers' new film isn't even out yet and controversy is already erupting. Hindus are upset over what they see as disrespectful portrayals of their religion. Producers are insisting that the film portrays a purely fictional faith. (Try not to laugh at that one.) And noted author Deepak Chopra has defended the film as well.
Well, the film's not out, so I can't make a judgment yet, but early buzz out there seems to be carrying the words 'Austin Powers rip-off' with it, which could hurt it at the box office. This is what I don't get: why do people protest films? If a bunch of people start protesting, everyone else is going to think: 'oooh, I should go see what the fuss is all about' and thus, the film in question, will be successful- or if not entirely successful at least profitable, which undermines the idea of protesting it in the first place.
Issue a statement, point out that the last really good movie Mike Meyers made was Austin Powers and let it go. There's a 50-50 chance it'll bomb anyway.
