The dust has finally cleared from the Democratic Nomination and already stories are circulating about the GOP worries over McCain's campaign. To be fair, I think this latest round of press coverage is more a reaction to McCain's speech last week:
To me, this speech sucked. It really did. Throughout the entire campaign I've thought that McCain wasn't the guy he was 8 years ago and this speech only proved it. He just feels so damn tired in this speech- and, once again, it's basically a speech that any Republican candidate in the past 20 years could have easily given. Not inspiring. Not energetic. Not in any way new.
But: people shouldn't jump the gun. To me, the interesting thing about this election is that both candidates have the potential to bust out and do serious damage on their way to 270 electoral votes. Both have some liabilities that have to be overcome and both are equally capable of winning past those problems and winning the election. It would be a mistake to start writing off McCain right now- after all, his campaign was close to dead at one point and he came back to take the nomination. The Democrats want to paint him as George Bush's third term, which is potentially brilliant. This speech, which was supposed to set him apart from Bush, only proved that the charge might well be sticking.
