Real Happy 4th!

This is a cheerful way to start the holiday. The St. Peter Regional Treatment Center announced about 53 lay offs in security staff today- that will officially affect about 63 positions when all is said and done. The reason given at least in the Free Press is that more fences and cameras have reduced the need for staffing. I think that's a potentially delicate line to walk given the fact that they keep mentally ill, dangerous people and sex offenders- but at the same time, I know after seven years of security work that there's nothing more detrimental to good security than an overabundance of people. Then you just get a bunch of people standing around.

But at the same time, you keep mentally ill people and sex offenders there. Wouldn't more security be good security, especially given the size of the facility?

I don't know. But it can't be a good way to spend the holiday.
