Fighting in South Ossetia

This is what happens when we tie ourselves down in quagmires in the Middle East. Things slip through- I blogged on rising tension with the breakaway region of the Republic of Georgia Abkhazia, but now there's actually heavy fighting in the other breakaway region of South Ossetia.

Trouble's ahead in the region. Russia is on the up and up and Russia wants to put it's foot down hard and weaken Georgia, who was taking steps to finally get it's collective shit together, so to speak. Georgia wants to join NATO and Russia, as usual, doesn't like it.

Russia's finger prints are all over this- I'll keep watching the wide skies of the 'web to see if someone in our government makes a statement about Russian futzing with Georgia, but I'm not holding my breath. Most Americans don't know where Abkhazia and South Ossetia are and most don't care. But the stability of democracy in the region is dependent on our government at least demonstrating awareness of a problem. But after the Orange Revolution in Ukraine and the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan one might slip through.
