There's been a coup d'etat in the West African Country of Mauritania. This is something of a setback for them- following a return to democracy in 2007 that the international community hailed as a new era for Mauritania. That said: there has been a political crisis gripping the country for a couple of weeks now and sadly, we see that in certain cases, political deadlock is an open invitation to military intervention, which is what has apparently happened.
Hmmm... I'd have to check and see, but I know in the case of South America, you can blame America's worst export for many political deadlocks: it's political system. Divided government leads to political gridlock and with an interventionist military coups usually result. But this just isn't good news- African government have enough problems and Mauritania was heading in the right direction. To be fair, after the last military coup in 2005, the Generals transitioned back to democracy right away over the next two years- but there's no word on what they're going to do now. One can only keep fingers crossed and hope that they do it again.
